Wait…really? Have you not read anything by or about him? Better get crackin’ on that book! In other critiques, this thing is stupid. Don Draper was in possession of a book of poetry by Frank O’Hara, the show doesn’t compare the two in any way. Is whoever made this saying that advertising creative work of the sixties is less artful than the poetry of the New York School? The show wasn’t comparing those two either. Here’s a fun word fact on which my friend Irene White does not hesitate to correct people:

Firmly in The Awl camp through all of this (couldn’t you watch The Awl vs n+1 all day?) but come on, in the spirit of loving a good fight, you have to give Gessen credit for the “news-aggregator site” crack. Sure, it’s cheap and inaccurate but also intentional and as a tone-setter for the rest of his response, it works. I dunno, it made me laugh in an “oh here we go” way and I appreciate that.

I guess it was a dis, except that later in the same sentence and for the rest of the piece he contradicts it. Kind of makes him look like like stupid and not that good at understanding things.

There are several anxiety disorders. Panic disorder is just one, and the only one characterized exclusively by panic attacks. Other anxiety disorders include:

generalized anxiety disorder

obsessive-compulsive disorder

phobias

post-traumatic stress disorder

social anxiety disorder

As you might imagine, these different disorders are treated with different medications (and therapies!), and sedatives are really only prescribed for panic attacks (which can result from most anxiety disorders, but are not necessarily the primary symptom), not for treatment of the underlying disorder. SSRIs are probably most commonly prescribed for managing anxiety disorders.

This skewing is just one of many reasons why Trainwrecks does not advocate authoritatively-toned essays based on personal knowledge.

The last (only?) time I saw Pavement was at the Masquerade in Atlanta in 1993. Got up the next morning in search of tacos to cure a hangover — while cruising the Virginia Highlands (no, not like that), news of Kurt Cobain’s suicide came on the radio.

Kurt Cobain died in 1994.

I think this argument makes sense rhetorically, but most people would send their kid to private school if they could. And that’s certainly true for most people against the public option. Now ask this question at SEC football game this weekend and see what happens.

I’m for the public option and would absolutely send my kids to private school if I could afford it. The public option is not about a blanket solution for everyone. A better metaphor involving public schools would be something like:

“Just as we have public schools to ensure all our kids have access to an education, regardless of income, so we should have a public health care option to ensure all our kids (and adults) have access to health care, regardless of income. The existence of public schools in no way threatens the existence of private schools, and so it follows with health care.”

Actually, I’m surprised that hasn’t been used. Thanks for the idea!

It was used by the president a week ago in a televised speech before a joint session of Congress.

This is the first in an occasional series I’m calling “How I Did It.” Today’s post is on everyone’s favorite subject (groan) - weight loss! Now that my mom’s worked really hard to get to a size 6, which is ridiculous and amazing and so, so impressive, I’ve been inspired.

2. You can’t make excuses.

At the beginning, my trainer gave me some guidelines on how he eats. (Technically, trainers aren’t supposed to give nutrition recommendations, at least in the state of NY.) They included no grains (not no carbs — because technically even sweet potatoes have carbs, though those are “good” carbs), no dairy. There were some other guidelines, but those were the hardest to wrap my head around. And yes, they are a bit extreme. But I asked Joel about yogurt and brown rice, and he said “There are no half-measures; Aruba is soon.”

Lady, there is a reason he legally can’t give you nutrition advice. Grains are sort of a major component of the human diet and like essential or whatever to staying alive or some junk. Your forefathers specifically domesticated crops so you could have yourself some cereals a couple times a day.

Don’t worry Julia Allison, you’re off the hook, I expect skipping food groups from you.

What would you rather have your parent post about on facebook? Your first poopy in the potty at age 2 or your first time getting busted for masturbating to ~~pornography~~ TnA flicks at age 14? Just as Elisa’s mom’s friends likely brought her tampons and chocolates, Edward’s friends may as well purchase this kid a few gift baskets with all the necessary accoutrements: movies, mags, embroidered hand towels. At least he’d get something out of this facebook discussion.

Poor kid. It’s one thing to have your dad announce on facebook that you “enjoy” watching “certain” things on “cable” - but for it to turn into a full-blown discussion wherein one is led down a path ending in someone’s stepfather taking “extra long showers”…. no. That is an entirely different thing. If I knew who this kid was, I would fly to his hometown, take him out for a burger, give him a hug and then flash him on the way out. He deserves it.

I worked for Julia Allison, pictured above, last January. It was the least productive and most irritating internship I could have ever experienced, in all honesty. I left that month with a nasty taste in my mouth. When I become a sucessful writer and journalist, I don’t plan on acting the way she does.

However, I did have a dream last night about Julia Allison coming to visit me. And in order to get back at her for being so ridiculous in January, I took her to this restaurant called Cheeseburger Bobby’s and their was a volcano that spit out lava every thirty minutes. She ate many cheeseburgers, and she asked my mom if it was okay to order “The Seinfeld,” which apparently was her code for beer because she didn’t want her lifecast followers to know she drinks. She drank so many of them and cried to my mom about her life.

What does this even mean?
